HYDE, Mary The Thrales of Streatham Park Harvard University Press 1977
8vo. Black cloth, gilt lettering on spine, illustrated dust jacket; pp. xvii, 373, [56, half colour plates]; light fading to edges of cover, slight wear to dust jacket; inscribed by author on front free endpaper.
Based on the diaries of Hester Thrale, this work by Mary Hyde (a leading Johnson collector and scholar) is a humourous and poignant insight into family life. Cataloguing the trials and successes of the Thrale family, Hyde uses her considerable knowledge and experience in the field to weave together source material and shrewd interpretation to give a compelling account of "the actual life of an eighteenth century family at the center of both the social and intellectual worlds".
