One of the most collected photography books of the twentieth century, Poste Restante details Strömholm’s extensive travels across the world. An early example of the photobook using portraiture, street scenes and abstract photographic fragments to build an autobiography and manifesto, Poste Restante was one of the most influential photobooks of the twentieth century. In their The Photobook: A History vol. I, Martin Parr and Gerry Badger write that ‘sex and death and rock and roll is an apposite description of the book’s tenor, as indeed it is for much stream-of-consciousness photography and for the increasingly self-focused diarist modes that followed’.
