HOUBRAKEN, J. William Duke of Gloucester.
Original engraving after the painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller at Kensington Palace published in the Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain, by John & Paul Knapton, London, c.1745. 360 x 225 mm.
This portrait was painted shortly before William's death on the 30th July 1700 when he was 11 years old. He was the only one of Queen Anne's children to survive infancy. Gloucester's death destabilised the succession, after which the act of settlement 1701 was passed to stop the throne passing on to a Catholic.
