    • CABLE, Mildred and Francesca FRENCH. The Gobi Desert. London: Hodder & Stoughton. [1943].

8vo. Original cloth with illustrated dust-wrappers (not price-clipped); pp. 303, colour frontispiece, two plates in colour, others after black and white photographs; wrapper with flaws and old repairs on the inside; otherwise a very good copy with 1943 ownership inscription to front fly-leaf.

First edition, fourth printing, just half a year after the first printing, signed by both authors on title-page. 'After living for more than twenty years in the province of Shansi in North China, I took the old trade route and with my companion Eva and Francesca French, trekked north-west past the Barrier of the Great Wall and into the country which lies beyond. For many years we travelled over the Desert of Gobi and among its oasis as itinerant missionaries, and we came to know the country and its people intimately' (text on lower panel of wrappers).
