WODEHOUSE, P.G. The Man Upstairs. London: Methuen and Co, 1914

8vo. Publisher’s red-brown cloth, spine lettered and richly gilt to a foliate design, upper board lettered in blind; pp. vii, [1 (blank)], 316, [31 (advertisements)], [1 (blank)]; publisher’s circular ‘Presentation Copy’ inkstamp to title, ownership inscription dated Edinburgh, January 1919 to front free endpaper; a few small marks to boards; slight foxing to edges of textblock; else very good.

First edition, first printing of this miscellaneous collection of short stories, mostly concerning love and featuring none of Wodehouse’s regular characters, this copy stamped by the publisher for presentation.

The Man Upstairs brings together nineteen short stories, most of which had first appeared in The Strand in the UK, with others drawn from US magazines Cosmopolitan and Collier’s. The collection was not published in the US. This is a notoriously poorly-produced book due to wartime privations, and copies in good condition are difficult to find.
