Correcting the Errors of ‘Anonymous Idiots’
WODEHOUSE, P.G.; T.M.R. WHITWELL (illustrator). The Head of Kay's. London: Adam and Charles Black. 1905.
8vo. Publisher’s red pictorial cloth decorated in dark grey, gold, and yellow; spine lettered in gilt; pp. [8], 280; 8 black-and-white plates by T.M.R. Whitwell including frontispiece; top-edge slightly dusty, spine dulled, slight wear to boards and extremities; endpapers browned, sporadic light foxing; otherwise very good; 1911 gift inscription to front free endpaper ‘to Ernie, with love from Mother on his 9th birthday’.
First edition in book form, first printing of Wodehouse’s fourth school story.
Another school extravaganza, full of humour and mischief, with a healthy dose of cricket and rugby. Set at the fictional public school of Eckleton, the novel follows the fortunes of Kay’s House and its unruly inhabitants, under the hapless leadership of the unpopular and tactless Mr Kay, while Kennedy, the newly appointed head boy, struggles to keep them in order.
The novel was first serialised in The Captain from October 1904 to March 1905, and published in book form on 5 October 1905. In his preface, Wodehouse remarks ‘When this story was appearing serially in The Captain, some anonymous idiot wrote to the Editor pointing out certain errors in the camp chapters. I am obliged. If he reads these chapters now, he will observe – with a thrill of joy – that I have made the corrections he suggested.’
Provenance: From the collection of eminent Wodehouse authority and collector Tony Ring, former President of the International Wodehouse Association and former editor of Wooster Sauce.
