    • Cricket Stories in the Land of Baseball

WODEHOUSE, P.G. Mike At Wrykyn. London: Herbert Jenkins. 1953.

8vo. Publisher’s red boards, spine lettered in black, price-clipped first-impression dust-jacket illustrated by W. Spence; pp. 189, [1 (blank)], [2 (advertisements)]; slight wear to corners, top-edge lightly spotted; uniform light toning; else near-fine; blind-embossed collector’s stamp of Mercy Samuel to front free endpaper.

First edition, first printing of this school novel, reissuing under a new title the first part of Mike (1909).

Mike, a talented cricket player, here competes with his brother Bob for the sole vacancy on the Wrykyn cricket team. In this edition, Wodehouse provides a new introduction which ‘gives a brief explanation of the peculiar pastime of cricket (a game which Mr. Wodehouse admits he finds inferior to baseball!)’ (jacket).

The second half of Mike was reworked as Enter Psmith (1935) and, later, as Mike and Psmith (1953).
