8vo. Publisher’s blue cloth, titled in red to spine, illustrated dust-jacket by Marcel Duchamp's, sticker price of $6.95 to front flap; edges of textblock blue, red endpapers; pp. [unpaginated]; neat archival tape repair to back of jacket, slight wear to jacket edges, very minor pushing to crown and base of spine; near fine.
First edition.
Sweethearts is an anagrammatic dialogue between a “he” and “she” composed to be read backwards. The entire poem is composed only of the letters in the word “sweethearts”. Emmett Williams was at the centre of the 1960s New York avant-garde. The jacket is particularly striking, reproducing Marcel Duchamp’s Coeurs Volants (1936).
