Original cloth, spines lettered in gilt, typographic wrappers (price-clipped); pp. xvi, 192; xiv, 418; wrappers minimally spotted, one with small marginal tear to front cover near hinge, a little offsetting from endpapers, otherwise very good, contemporary Japanese bookseller's labels inside front covers.

Later edition (first 1953 and 1955) of these classics of modern Western Islamic and Qur'anic scholarship. The books by the eminent Scottish Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Edinburgh from 1964 to 1979, Watt (1909-2006), remained in print up to the 1990s, and are considered the foremost Western interpretations of Islam, a faith that informed Watt's Christian faith as a priest of the Scottish Episcopal Church. He began to move away from the concept of Trinity and closer to monotheism.
