An attractive bilingual edition of the libretto of Wagner’s celebrated Lohengrin, conforming to the Victorian house rule of the Royal Italian Opera (now the Royal Opera House) of performing all operas – irrespective of their original language – entirely in Italian.

Founded in 1732 as the Theatre Royal, the Covent Garden auditorium was renamed the Royal Italian Opera on 6 April 1847, when it reopened following refurbishment with a performance of Gioachino Rossini’s Semiramide. Under the direction of Michael Costa (1808–1884) and his successors, all operas were translated into and performed entirely in Italian from 1847 to 1892, when Gustav Mahler conducted the first Covent Garden performance of Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle in the original German. The word ‘Italian’ was thereafter quietly dropped from the name of the opera house.

An ‘entirely novel feature’ for this libretto is a statement on p. 3 bearing the ‘time of Commencement and Ending of each Act; showing when the Performance terminates, and for what time Carriages may be ordered’.
