First edition with a Foreword by Wolcott Gibbs. "In The Lonely Ones Mr Steig offers us a series of impressions of people who have been set off from the rest of the world by certain private obsessions - usually, it seems, by a devotion to some particularly disastrous cliche of thought or behaviour. They are not necessarily unhappy - some of them, in fact, are obviously only too well pleased with themselves, and loneliness, or singularity is, of course, by no means an unhappy state - they are simply not quite like other girls and boys."
