SHEFFIELD, Thomas. The Story of the Settlement. Grahamstown as it was, and Grahamstown as it is. Compiled from the most authentic Authorities, and issued as a memento of the Settlers' Memorial Tower, at Grahamstown, on the 24th Day of May, 1882. Grahamstown, T. & G. Sheffield, 1882.

8vo. Contemporary (original?) maroon cloth-covered boards with ms label on front cover; pp. 102, folding lithographic frontispiece with red letterpress and wood-engraved plate at the end; worn and a little spotted, foxing to frontispiece and the initial two leaves; provenance: the label on the front cover reads 'Presented to R. G. White on the Day of the Opening May 24th 1882', this repeated at head of title, identifying the recipient as the son of a settler; R. G. White's stamp in the text.
First edition. A very rare survival from the pioneering days of the British Cape Colony, written by the printer and publisher of the Eastern Star. This ephemeral publication proved to be popular, as in 1912 appeared the third edition.
Mendelssohn IV, p. 201.
