LEYEL, Mrs C.F. [Hilda LEYEL]. Savoury Cold Meals. London: Geoge Routledge & Sons. [1927].
8vo. Original cloth with ilustrated dust-wrappers; pp. viii, 87; wrapper a little discoloured and with minor flaws; pp. viii, 87; apart from minimal toning or very light spotting internally very good.
Scarce first edition, the variant with the colourfully illustrated wrappers and not the typographic one. Hilda Leyel (1880-1957) was a leading light in herbalism in Britain. In 1927, the year after the publication of this book she founded The Society of Herbalists, and went on to establish the Culpeper chain of herbal shops.
Cold Grouse and Prune Salad, is certainly a mouth-watering delicacy, whereas Salade Monte Carlo, combining banana with tomatoes, grapes and mayonnaise with anchovy sauce, is debatable.
The artist of the wrapper is Kathleen Hale, the celebrated British artist, illustrator and children's author most famous for her illustrations for Orlando the Marmalade Cat.
