In A Legacy of Spies Peter Guillam (who was a colleague of George Smiley) is wrenched out of his happy retirement. A letter from the British Secret Service summons him back to London as his Cold War past is scrutinised. In an NPR interview, Le Carré told the host, Terry Gross, that one of his reasons for writing the novel was to “make a case for Europe” in the wake of the 2016 British referendum.
