First published in 1937, all editions of this classic are rare. The revised tenth edition appeared in in 2002. This impressive tome is the result of Hitti's manuscript which was the basis of the graduate course he taught at Princeton, where the Lebanese scholar had established Arabic studies in the US. Philip Khuri Hitti (1886-1978) was Maronite Lebanese born under the Ottomans. Following education in Beirut, he taught at Columbia and then Princeton Universities.
