    • THE ABYSS OF THE HUMAN SOUL

HESSE, Hermann; Stephen HUDSON (trans.) In Sight of Chaos. Zurich: Verlag Seldwya. 1923.

8vo. Original grey paper boards; pp. 64; Brown stain to rear cover, fading to spine and extremeties with loss to cover on hinge, darkened top edge, a very good copy.

First edition in English of Hesse's famous work on Dostoevsky, featuring essays on The Brothers Karamazov and The Idiot.

Hermann Hesse so revered Dostoevsky, he christened him as; "his closest fellow-traveler into the abyss of the human soul". First issued in German in 1920 as Blick ins Chaos,

      T. S. Eliot was incredibly inspired by In Sight of Chaos and referenced the last lines of Hesse's essay on Brother's Karamazov in his note to line 366 of The Waste Land (1922). The essay had been serialized in the iconic Dial magazine in the same summer.
