HAMILTON FINLAY, Ian. Glasgow Beasts, An A Burd. With John Picking & Pete McGinn, Edinburgh: Wild Hawthorn Press / Wild Flounder Press. 1961.
115 × 180 mm. Publisher’s stapled wrappers with brown dust jacket and titles printed in blue.
The first edition of Finlayʼs second poetry collection and the first book to be published at the Wild Hawthorn Press. Finlayʼs first poetry collection, The Dancers Inherit The Party was printed in California, therefore this was also Finlayʼs first collection to be published in the UK. Hugh MacDiarmid described the book as written ‘in the language of the gutterʼ, but four subsequent editions were printed within a year.‘Finlayʼs poems in Glaswegian dialect, vehemently repudiated by senior Scottish figures like MacDairmid, helped to forge a link with contemporary poets like Robert Creeley.ʼ (Yves Abrioux)
