‘In Memoriam’

[GLEESON WHITE, Joseph.] The Studio. An Illustrated Magazine of Fine and Applied Art. Vol. 13 no. 62. London: [Ballantyne, Hanson, and Co.] for The Studio. 14 May 1898.

Large 8vo. Publisher’s green printed wrappers, Art Nouveau illustration of man and woman under lemon trees to upper wrapper, large Liberty & Co. advertisement to rear wrapper signed L.W., fore- and tail-edges uncut; pp. xvi (advertisements), [2] 215–284, xvii–xx (advertisements); numerous black-and-white in-text illustrations, four plates on embossed card included in pagination (of which three in colour; slight wear to extremities, short closed tear at head of spine; short closed marginal tear to pp. 275–6; a very good copy.

Vol. 13, no. 62 of The Studio, the first issue of which featured illustrations and a cover design by Beardsley, this issue published less than three months after Beardsley’s untimely death and featuring an eleven-page ‘In Memoriam’ column on Beardsley’s life and work.

Gleeson White (here signed G.W.), the first editor of The Studio, contributed the lengthy tribute. There is an illustration by Henri Bellery-Desfontaines after Beardsley (facing p. 215), and two more from drawings by Beardsley. ‘Death’, Gleeson White concludes, ‘has given Aubrey Beardsley the immortality of youth; and in future histories of illustration, whether for blame or praise, men must needs add that it was a mere boy who did these things, and did them as no other had ever attempted before’ (p. 263). Of the four lavishly produced plates, three are after illustrations by Beardsley.
