Ginsberg composed Wales – A Visitation in the summer of 1967 while travelling through the Black Mountains with the publisher Tom Maschler and under the influence of LSD. The poem is deeply indebted to the Romantic tradition, with visionary descriptions of the Welsh landscape and even the bleating of lambs evoking the prophetic imagination of William Blake.
