    • FLEISCHMANN, Hector. An Unknown Son of Napoleon (Count Leon). New York, John Lane, 1914.

8vo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pp. 291, photogravure portrait frontispiece retaining tissue guard, and 8 plates after Ledoux, Delaroche, et al.; spine faded, a little foxing throughout, nonetheless a very good copy; light wear and bumping to extremities, gift inscription to front free endpaper, very light and occasional spoting, a few leaves roughly opened; a good copy of an increasingly scarce title.

First edition in English, the American issue. Fleischmann was the author and editor of a number of works on revolutionary and republican France, including Napoléon et l'amour (Paris: 1909), Pauline Bonaparte et ses amants (Paris: 1910), Victor Hugo, Waterloo, Napoléon (Paris: 1912), and Napoléon III et les femmes (Paris: 1913). The present title was originally published in French as Bâtarde d'empereur, d'après les papiers du baron de Menneval ... et de nombreux documents inédits (Paris: 1913), and is an account of the comte Léon (1806-1881) and his mother Eléonore Denuelle de la Plaigne (1787-1868), which draws on a number of unpublished manuscripts, particularly from the collections of the de Méneval family.
