    • ELIOT, T.S. The Waste Land. New York: Boni and Liveright. 1923.

8vo. Original stiff black cloth boards, lettered in gilt on spine and upper cover, with scarce original dustwrapper; pp. 64; fine.

Second edition, identical to the second state of the first edition, one of 1000 numbered copies, with the dropped "a" in "mountain" on page 41 uncorrected.

For this book publication Eliot added the "Notes" which were not included in the periodical appearances of the poem in the Criterion (October 1922) and the Dial (November 1922). Eliot's main purpose in providing these notes was to make the book a bit more substantial in size as he thought the poem was a little short for an entire book. He was later to describe these notes as a "remarkable exposition of bogus scholarship".

Provenance: one of thirty three copies presented to Scofield Thayer, editor and co-owner of The Dial and the first US publisher of The Waste Land, then by descent.

      Gallup A6b.
