DOUGHTY, Henry Montagu. Friesland Meres and through the Netherlands. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington. 1889
8vo. Original cloth-backed illustrated boards, dark green endpapers; pp. xii, 359, with frontispiece, 4 plates, 2 folding maps and numerous illustrations in the text; wear to the edges of the cover, corners bumped, some small damage to paste-downs.
A surprisingly rare first edition of this lesser known, but charming work by the brother of the Arabian Explorer C.M Doughty. Friesland Meres is a good humoured work of travel literature detailing a family boat trip through the Netherlands. In their vessel of many previous adventures The Gypsy, the family venture forth again to discover the unknown, and with a sense of bravado and the occasional mishap, they succeed in both entertaining and informing us.
