DOUGHTY, Henry Montagu. Friesland Meres and through the Netherlands. London. Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington 1890
8vo. Original cloth-backed illustrated boards, dark green endpapers; pp. xii, 457, 4 (reviews), [2], 32 (advertisments); wear to the edges of the cover, corners bumped, some minor damage to spine.
Third and enlarged edition of this lesser known, but charming work by the brother of arabian explored C.M Doughty. Friesland Meres is a good humoured work of travel literature detailing a family boat trip through the Netherlands. In their vessel of many previous adventures The Gypsy, the family venture forth again to discover the unknown, and with a sense of bravado and the occasional mishap, they succeed in both entertaining and informing us.
