    • ‘Once the Needle Goes in It Never Comes Out’

CLARK, Larry. Tulsa. Tokyo: Taka Ishii Gallery .

4to. Publisher’s black cloth, spine lettered in Japanese in silver, in the photographic dust-jacket; pp. [64]; black-and-white photographic illustrations throughout, text in Japanese; a few thumb-marks to jacket, a few small tape reinforcements to reverse of jacket; internally clean and bright; a near-fine copy.

First Japanese edition, limited to 1,000 copies, of Larry Clark’s influential and highly controversial first photobook, published for the exhibition of his work at Taka Ishii Gallery in Tokyo.

Larry Clark, also known for his raw film Kids (1995), first gained recognition as a photographer with Tulsa . The book, which, according to critic David Levi Strauss, ‘changed everything’ (Roth, p. 208), documents the lives of his friends, including disturbing scenes of drug use, violence, and sex in his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, through photographs taken between 1963 and 1971. Tulsa opens with an autobiographical statement by Clark, translated into Japanese for this edition. In the original English, he writes:

i was born in Tulsa Oklahoma in 1943. when i was sixteen i started shooting amphetamine. i shot with my friends everyday for three years and then left town but i’ve gone back through the years. once the needle goes in it never comes out. L.C.

Tulsa was first published in 1971 by Lustrum Press, an independent New York publisher of photography books founded by the photographer Ralph Gibson, known for publishing experimental and unconventional photographic works, including those by Mary Ellen Mark and Robert Frank.

See Roth, The Book of 101 Books ( 2001 ).
