This is a travelogue by a British physician into the eastern part of Austro-Hungary, with observations on the medical infrastructure and education, the different societies and nationalities encountered, economy, farming, mining, and natural history. In Hungary he enjoyed the hospitalty of the Festetics family and stayed in Festetics Palace, one of the biggest country houses of the region. From there he carried out scientific studies of Lake Balaton.
