Alan Bennett second play opened at the Queen's Theatre in October 1971. Originally entitled A Serious Man, it was directed by Patrick Garland with Kenneth More as the Labour MP at the heart of the play. It was winner of the Evening Standard Award for the Best Comedy of 1971.
