ARMITAGE, Merle. Accent on America. New York: E Weyhe. 1944.
8vo. Original cloth lettered in red on spine and upper board, red endpapers, top edge stained red; pp. 403, [3], with several in-text illustrations by the author; lettering on spine a little dull, signs of a previous inscription on the front endpaper now erased, otherwise a very good copy. Provenance: From the library of American writer, editor, and artist Fleur Cowles (1908-2009); inscribed by the author "For Gardner Cowles from Merle Armitage, 1947" to Gardner "Mike" Cowles Jr. (1903-1985), American newspaper and magazine publisher, and Fleur Cowles’ third husband; letter tipped in on the verso of front endpaper addressed "To Mike [Cowles]" (see below).
First limited edition, one of 1675 copies, of the author's autobiography, filled with tales of his friendships with well-known writers, dancers, opera singers, and musicians.
The tipped-in letter reads: "Mike - I liked it well enough to buy one myself. Merle should pay you the royalty. Thanks - Tom."
