The hotel opened in 1931 on the former site of Dorchester House. It was built in art deco style in just 18 months and was designed as one of the Worlds first reinforced buildings.
Initially developed by Sir Robert McAlpine and Gordon Hotels, the hotel was purchased by the Sultan of Brunei in 1985. The hotel soon established itself as a premier luxury spot for stars and Politicians. Prince Philip held his stag night here in 1947. The hotel is closely linked to Royalty with regular high profile events.
