The company, founded in 1896 was originally known as the Anglo - American Nile Steamer and Hotel Company. Headquartered in Cairo the company was a major competitor to Thomas Cook and Son, operating a fleet of luxuriously furnished river steamers that catered to European and American tourists.
The steamers operated between Cairo and Aswan. During the 1930's the company suffered a slow decline, largely due to the U.S stock market crash and the increase in aviation travel.
During the Second World War most of the companies ships were used as floating hospitals.
