The hotel which had previously been a barracks for the British army, opened in 1875. The owners were Colombo Hotels Company Ltd who advertised it with the claim "it was the only fully European owned and fully equipped hotel in the East."
The hotel was located facing the harbour and just a few yards from the principle landing stage making it a convenient hotel for passengers arriving by ship.
