    • ANON. Dollar Steamship Lines, Orient - Round the World.

      Original luggage label, c.1924. 110 x 195 mm.

In 1903 former lumbar magnate Robert Dollar set up his shipping company, with its headquarters based in San Francisco. In 1923 the purchase of seven "President Ships" owned by the U.S government allowed Dollar to pioneer his successful round the World service with published scheduled departure and arrival times.

The death of Robert Dollar in 1932, coupled with the great depression would eventually lead the company to bankruptcy. The incoming Roosevelt administration also removed the critical U.S mail contracts. The company stock was then acquired by the maritime commission.

This label was given to passengers boarding at all ports in the Orient.

Very rare label in fine condition.
