ANON. Cunard White Star to Europe, Queen Elizabeth.
Original luggage label, c.1946. 95 x 115 mm.
Cunard was originally formed in 1840 and was known as the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. In 1919 Cunard relocated its British home port from Liverpool to Southampton to better cater for travellers from London.
With increased competition and the great depression the British government offered Cunard loans in 1934 to finish the Queen Mary and to build a second ship, Queen Elizabeth on the condition that Cunard merged with the then ailing White Star line to form Cunard White Star line.
Queen Elizabeth was launched in 1938 but first entered service in 1940 as a troop ship. Cunard purchased White Stars share in 1947 and the company name reverted to Cunard Line.
Queen Elizabeth completed her final atlantic crossing in 1968.
