    • ANON. Carlton Hotel, London.

      Original hotel luggage label, c.1900. 130 x 170 mm.

The Carlton Hotel opened in 1899 and was designed by Architect C.J. Phipps as part of a larger development that included the rebuilding of his Majestys theatre which was adjacent to the hotel site. The hotels actual location was on the corner of Haymarket and Pall Mall.

The Carlton was originally run by Swiss hotelier Cesar Ritz (see label), with Auguste Escoffier as the head chef. In its early days it was one of Londons most fashionable hotels and drew some customers away from the Savoy Hotel which Ritz had previously managed.

After forming the Ritz Hotel syndicate, he left the Carlton Hotel to manage the newly opened Ritz Hotel in London in 1906. The hotel was demolished in 1958 and the New Zealand high commission was built on the site.

Printers: Howard & Jones, Litho, London.

A very rare label in fine condition.
