The Wagons Lits company opened the hotel in 1914. It was situated in the legation quarter of the city and abutted the Tartar Wall (as depicted in this label).
At this time it was built to receive a growing Cosmopolitan clientele arriving from Europe, usually on the Trans Siberian Express. During the 1920's Thomas Cook Travel set up an office in the hotel. In 1937 the Japanese invaded China and took over the hotel.
From 1949 the Peoples Republic of China held state functions here.
