8vo. Original illustrated cloth with bevelled edges, patterned endpapers; pp. 255, wood-engraved frontispiece with tissue guard in pagination, full-page wood-engravings; cloth a little darkened and marked, corner of front fly-leaf with tiny flaw; otherwise a very good copy.

Very uncommon first edition of this first-hand account of life among the natives of South Africa, written by a Methodist missionary with 26 years experience of the country. Arthur Brigg (active c. 1856-1890) gives detailed descriptions of the daily life of the 'Kaffirs' as all native tribes were called. Of course the devastating conflicts between the natives (mostly Xhosa) and Europeans, Boers and British settlers, are the constant backdrop of the narrative.
