    • An Eighteen-Carat Kid

WODEHOUSE, P.G.; Will GREFE (illustrator). The Little Nugget. New York: W. J. Watt & Company. 1914.

8vo. Publisher’s black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, upper board lettered and decorated in gilt, in a facsimile dust-jacket; pp. [4], 300; frontispiece with tissue guard and a further 2 plates by Will Grefe; offsetting to title, uniform light toning to rest of text, the odd spot, occasional creasing to corners, short closed tear to pp. 43–44 touching running-titles but not affecting legibility; otherwise a very good copy.

First US edition, first printing of this comic thriller, illustrated by Will Grefe (1875–1957), a prolific artist for The Saturday Evening Post.

Based on a story published in The Captain the previous year under the title ‘The Eighteen Carat Kid’, The Little Nugget takes its title from the nickname given to Ogden Ford, a child whose chief attraction is his value as a target for kidnappers. The novel was first published in book form in the UK by Methuen on 28 August 1913.
