THOMPSON, George E. Life in Tripoli with a Peep at Ancient Carthage. Liverpool: Edward Howell. 1894.
8vo. Original red cloth, decorated in black and lettered in gilt; pp. viii, 116, [4], with thirty photogravure plates; apart from light slanting and offsetting from endpapers a very good copy; provenance: front fly-leaf inscribed by a pupil of Castle Cary Collegiate School, Edith Haine, dated 1897.
Very rare first edition of this travelogue of a trip to Tripoli in Libya, via Malta, well-illustrated with very clear snapshots. The tourist from Birkenhead keenly observed - and photographed - the ethnic minorities in the largest oasis of North Africa, including Kurds, Jews and Sub-Saharan Africans. Thompson describes how he interacted with the people he took photos of and how they responded to his request.
LibraryHub locates only three copies, in the National Library of Scotland, at Trinity College, Dublin and in the British Library.
