First edition of the third catalogue raisonne of Chagall's lithographs with an introduction by Julien Cain, legendary general administrator of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France before the Nazi occupation.
Julien Cain writes in his introduction to this spectacular and invaluable contribution to the iconic artists mesmorising ouevre, "Chagall's secret is that he remained without theory, without method…he was content, instead to 'sing like a bird'", emphasizing Chagall's refusal to abide by prescriptive artsitic philosophies. He goes onto quote the artist himself, "What seems strange is clear".
