WODEHOUSE, P.G. The Purloined Paperweight. New York: Simon and Schuster. 1967.

8vo. Publisher’s quarter mustard cloth over blue paper-covered boards, lettered and decorated in blue to spine and upper board, top-edge yellow, in the illustrated dust-jacket by Seymour Chwast with printed price $4.50 to front flap; pp. [2], 188, [2 (blank)]; slight pushing to spine ends; near fine; with an inscription from Peter Schwed to Charles Gould in blue ink to the dedication page (see below).

First edition, first impression inscribed from Wodehouse’s Simon & Schuster editor, Peter Schwed (1911–2003), to the eminent Wodehouse collector Charles Gould
      (1944–2017).

The purloined paperweight was first published in the US on 12 May 1967, followed by the UK edition on 26 October 1967 under the alternative title Company for Henry. The novel features Algy, who first appeared in Jill the Reckless (1920).

Wodehouse dedicated his book ‘To Peter Schwed, best of publishers’. Beneath this, Schwed writes: ‘and in turn | To Charles Gould | best of wodehouse appreciators’. Charles Gould was the author of What’s in Wodehouse?, a compendium of quizzes and ephemera relating to Wodehouse’s novels, and was a member of the Wodehouse society in both the UK and the US. Schwed became Wodehouse’s editor in 1954, beginning with the publication of The Return of Jeeves.
