    • To Be Published on Wodehouse’s Ninety-Third Birthday

WODEHOUSE, P.G. Draft manuscript of ‘Chapter One’ (Chapter Three in the published novel) of Bachelor’s Anonymous. [Remsenburg.] August 1972.

Housed in a modern card folder; manuscript on paper, ff. [4] (280 mm x 210 mm) featuring an early draft of part of Bachelor’s Anonymous, in black ink with additions and corrections in red ink, all dated ‘August 2, 72’ to upper right corners; first sheet signed by Wodehouse.

A signed manuscript draft of an early chapter of Bachelor’s Anonymous; the novel itself would be published on Wodehouse’s ninety-second birthday in 1973.

Headed ‘Chapter One’ on three of the four leaves, this is in fact an early, rough draft of Chapter 3 of the published work (pp. 23–32 in the 1973 UK first edition), which may have been where the novel began at this stage of composition. Additional notes cross-reference later parts of the manuscript (not present), (‘See Aug 9’, ‘See Aug 12’ added in black and red respectively to the first leaf).

As usual with Wodehouse’s manuscripts, the left margins are used for notes and prompts.
