8vo. Publisher’s quarter binding with blue cloth to spine and blue card over boards, lettered in white to spine, typographic dust-jacket designed by Steve Snider with printed price of $29.95 or ‘$40.00 in Canada’; pp. [4], 1079, [3]; a little shelf wear to jacket, slight pushing to crown and base of spine, a couple of scuffs to textblock edges, minor bumping to corners; internally clean and bright; near fine.

First edition, first impression.

The book takes its title from the fictional film Infinite Jest which is ‘said to be so entertaining that anyone who watches it loses all desire to do anything but watch it.’ The novel was a success, selling roughly fifteen thousand copies in hardback, earning its place as a countercultural cult classic. Addiction is a key theme in the novel, and Wallace was hospitalized for drug abuse and depression in his early twenties, but finished writing the novel before he turned thirty. There was no clear start date to when he started writing Infinite Jest, but pieces of the novel date back to 1986.
