Foolscap folio. 18th-century full calf (heavily restored in the late 20th century); pp. [xvii], 206, [2]; [iv], 68; [iv], 86, [2, blank], 87-88, [2, blank]; [ii], 4, 3-25, [ii], 63-75; title-page in red and black, engraved frontispiece, additional engraved title-page, 13 engraved plates, 2 full-page engravings in the text (sometimes called 'plates', smaller engravings and woodcuts in the text, typographical diagrams in the text, pp. 11, 15 and 119 in the first part with flaws to corners, pp. 51/2 with flawed margins and rather old paper repairs (loss of page numbers), 3Z2 with old repaired tear, one plate cropped at lower margin (3 cm of image missing), overall here and there light browning and a few minor spots, two preliminary pages with old calculations in pencil; a good and complete copy.

Uncommon first edition of this sum of military technology, tactics, strategy, surveying and ballistics, based on the practical lessons learned during the English Civil War and from scientific authorities, including Mersenne and Galileo.
