This book was intended as an affordable follow up to the authors' magisterial 2004 volume Ireland's Wild Orchids, and in its most popular form is a pocket-size, ring-bound waterproof guide including pages for the reader's own notes. It was hailed as "a notable alliance of science, art and craft, and a timely tool in the current run of orchidaceous summers" (Viney, M. 2009 "Book review: Ireland's wild orchids: a field guide". Biology and Environment: Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy 110B, 79). However, this special edition goes quite against the original rationale of the publication by being a lavish production, with the original watercolour not being reproduced in the book.
