Ed Sanders was christened "a leader of New York's Other Culture" by Life Magazine, and was featured on the February 1967 cover of an issue. Editor of the prominent feature, Fuck You: A Magazine of the Arts he was a leading catalyst, and at the forefront, of the mimeograph revolution. The magazine was published or, as the blurb states, "printed, published, zapped and ejaculated" in the late 1960s from his bookshop,Peace Eye, in downtown New York. The Toe Queen portrays the life of a Times Square hustler, "Tillie The Toe Queen".
Sanders read The Toe Queen Poems at Café le Metro in the spring of its publication year and the positive response it garnered inspired him to form his band The Fugs several months afterwards.
