Some Women was among the last projects that Robert Mapplethorpe undertook, and includes a retrospective of eighty-six portraits of women, the majority of which had never been published in book form before. Taken almost exclusively in the studio, these portraits offer a representative example of Mapplethorpe’s later style. For an artist most notoriously known for explicit homoerotic photographs, this publication offers an alternative view of his artistic contribution. Included are some of the most recognisable faces of the day, alongside portraits of women of all ages, presenting Mapplethorpe’s multifaceted observation of feminine beauty.
