After meeting travel agent Valerie on his journey and embarking on an affair, Renault is plunged into a new life when he agrees to aid Valerie and her boss in propositioning consenting adults sexual tourism in the third world….
After causing mass controvery for seeming to promote Islamaphobia in an interview about Platform, Houellebecq faced charges for encouraging racial and religious hatred but the charges were later dismissed.
Julian Barnes, on reviewing Houellebecq's Atomised in The TLS, made the statement that it is, "A novel which hunts big game while others settle for shooting rabbit".
