This is the third Allen Ginsberg collection of poetry to be published with City Lights Publishing, following Howl and Kaddish. This collection is an example of Ginsberg in his prime. Originally titled Some Skin, a Body of Poems, he changed it to Reality Sandwiches, in reference to a line from the included poem On Burrough's Work:
"Naked Lunch is natural to us/ we eat reality sandwiches".
This edition is identified as a first edition first printing due to its lack of printing notice in combination with the third line of the copyright page, where the "t" in "Pocket" is about three points lower than the other letters in the same line.
