Joseph Cornell (1903–1972), the celebrated surrealist artist and experimental filmmaker, is perhaps best known for his avant-garde assemblages and box constructions, in which he arranged vibrant images of birds within delicately composed settings.
A Convergence of Birds contains twenty-two works of fiction by as many authors, each accompanied by photographs of Cornell's artworks, transforming the book into a kind of literary collage. Contributors include Diane Ackerman, Joyce Carol Oates, Rick Moody, Barry Lopez, Robert Coover, Howard Norman, Paul West, Siri Hustvedt, Dale Peck, Joanna Scott, Robert Pinsky, Lydia Davis, Mary Caponegro, John Yau, and others. In this limited edition, each author has signed their respective contribution.
