DELAGRAVE, Andre. De la Grèce et de l'Asie, ou histoire de leurs anciennes révolutions … Tome premier [all published]. Paris, Chasseriau, Verdière, and Mongie, 1822.
8vo. Contemporary German two-tone marbled and mottled boards, spine wit two contrasting lettering-pieces; pp. [4], xvi, 444; only occasionally a little spotted internally, otherwise a very attractive copy from the Oettingen-Wallerstein library at Schloss Seyfriedsberg (old stamp to title; library contents partly dispersed through the trade in the 1930s).
First published by Treuttel and Wurtz in 1820 under the title Histoire des révolutions et des guerres de la Grèce et de l'Asie, 1: depuis Cyrus jusqu'aux successeurs d'Alexandre, this is a re-issue with a new cancel title of the original sheets. Both issues are extremely rare. The author, sometimes spelled De La Grave, was according to a French contemporary review a military figure and therefore particularly suited to describe the Greeks at war against Cyrus. The planned but unpublished further two volumes would have continued the Greek military history up to Alexander. The Journal des savants of 1817 announced 'three or four volumes' to be published by subscription. Other but sparse bibliographical references categorize this work as philhellenic - inspired by the Greek War of Independence, and extolling Greek superior strategy and patriotic spirit.
