A WORLD LOST IN TIME
CLUNN, Chris. BUMMAREE: Photographs of Smithfield. London:Fior Books Imprint.2002.
Square 8vo. Black and White photo illustrated card wrappers; unpaginated; fine.
Bummaree (1995-1998), which photographer Chris Clunn has admitted he regards as one of his most important works to date, documents the colourful characters of London’s old Smithfield meat market in this collection, what with 'Bummaree' being the name for a porter at the Fish market.
On his fascination with Smithfields market in the Intoduction to this, his second book, Clunn would state; "The fact that meat was sold there really had nothing to do with it. It was a world lost in time with a Dickensian feeling, heightened by the fact that its work practices had barely changed since Victorian times".
His work is held in the permanent archives of the National Portrait Gallery, as well as various other prominent museums and libraries.
